Give a Loan, Plant a Tree, Paint a Life
Tiyeseko Women's Club and Kastokota
Social Care for the Vulnerable
Amount Needed: $2,000
When: January, 2012
What it Covers: 20 hours of training in small business skills, market surveys and strategic planning; one year of monitoring, one revolving loan of $1,000 at 5% interest.
Background and Business: The Tiyeseko women borrowed $1,000 from us to keep chickens in 2009. After some success, they chose to forward $200 USD of their profits to the KSVC, a local group aspiring to care for the vulnerable, but lacking funds. KSCV has thrived with the investment helping over 75 orphaned, widowed and HIV positive members of the community, however both groups are now searching for a way to build upon their income to support the continuation of their work. After participating in the business training that you support, each group will identify and evaluate an income generating activity to pursue, choosing a group to receive the first loan which is repaid into a fund for the second club to use for their own business.
Lihulo Enterprises
Amount Needed: $3,000
What it Covers: $2,200 goes directly into the loan at 5% interest while $800 covers 18 months of monitoring and evaluation.
Background and Business: Lihulo translates into the foam that spills over the top of milk that is being stirred. Overflowing abundance. This small but effective development firm in Zambia is working to lift rural communities out of poverty by supporting small to medium business growth. Sound familiar? Lihulo is CMI's sister organization in Zambia, and we would like to ask for your support in helping them to finally invest in an income generating activity which can help them over the long run to sustain their outreach without having to dig into their own pockets.
Chindwin Savings and Loan Association
Amount Needed: $2,000
What it Covers: Four days of guided strategic planning, market surveys and management training. One loan of $1,000 repaid at 10% annual interest; 12 months monitoring and evaluation.
Background and Business: The SLA is a group of 25 home based caregivers who decided to form a revolving loan fund to help support their work in the local community. Depositing savings each week into a group fund and taking turns drawing out small loans, they have been successful at not only continuing their work with the vulnerable, but also have grown into an organization that exemplifies leadership, efficiency and honesty. CMI gave a loan to the SLA in 2009 for poultry rearing, which has been paid back despite several challenges they faced. We believe in their potential and are eager to support their work further by offering a second loan for a carefully selected and monitored business in 2012.
Program for Vulnerable Women and Children
Amount Needed: $1,500
What it Covers: $1,000 in a loans at 10% annual interest shared with 3-5 local women's groups; business training for over 50 women and creation of a revolving loan fund for the PVWC to draw on over the next 2 years.
Background and Business: PVWC was Founded by Joyce Ngoma (see left in photo) in 2004 after working for over ten years with literacy and empowerment programs targeting women in Zambia. Encouraged by the community, PVCW has grown to assist over a dozen women and youth groups outside of Mpika, Northern Province with literacy, vocational skills, and assistance for the abused and vulnerable. Talking with Joyce, she has expressed a strong interest in helping the women she works with improve their access to small loans, as well as fund PVWC activities through self-generating income. This loan program will help the women she works with access small loans and provide PVWC with a business loan as the initial cycle of loans are paid back. Please Donate!
Color Me In! will pool your contribution with gifts from other members to fund each loan above as soon the goal is reached!
